This preparation of magnesium is reacted with the Krebs cycle intermediate malic acid. A component of over 300 enzymatic processes in the body, magnesium provides nutritional support for muscles and bones, as well as for several physiological functions including cellular energy production and healthy cardiac function.

Magnesium helps convert carbohydrates, protein, and fats to energy, acts as a catalyst in thousands of enzymatic processes, regulates and maintains vascular tone, opposes calcium deposition into soft tissue, and is critical to proper bone formation. It is an ingredient of strong teeth and bones and plays a vital role in the conversion of energy (metabolism). It regulates calcium and potassium metabolism, facilitates muscle constriction and relaxation, and assists in nerve transmission and conduction.

Diet, farming techniques, and prescription medications are all factors that may contribute to magnesium deficiency. Certain medications deplete this nutrient in the body as an unintended side-effect. Supplementing the diet with calcium may also lead to magnesium deficiency as calcium can hinder absorption of magnesium when consumed at high levels. Conventional farming techniques that rely on the use of synthetic fertilizers strip nutrients like magnesium from the soil. Finally, refining grains, a major element of most American diets, removes essential vitamins and minerals, including magnesium. As much as 75% of the phytonutrient (plant nutrients) content of grains is lost when refined.
